The first United Wiffle National Championship Tournament was held at WellSpan Park in York, Pennsylvania in 2020. This tournament determines which league is the best in the country. There is a national fast pitch tournament every summer held in Morenci, Michigan as well. The tournament is featured at #27 in the book, "101 Baseball Places to Visit Before You Strike Out." The World Wiffle Ball Championship remains the oldest tournament in the nation, having moved to the Chicago suburbs in 2013, after introducing regional stops over three decades in Baltimore Los Angeles Indianapolis Eugene, Oregon and Barcelona, Spain. With the explosion of the Internet in the 1990s, there are now hundreds of Wiffle ball tournaments played in the United States, most in the same place every year, with a few tournament "circuits". In 1980, the World Wiffle Ball Championship was established in Mishawaka, Indiana by Jim Bottorff and Larry Grau. That year, Rick Ferroli began holding tournaments in his backyard tribute to Fenway Park in Hanover, Massachusetts. Wiffle ball tournaments have been held in the United States and Europe since 1977. Ī wiffle ball, showing the perforated half. The line across the bottom of the triangle is about twenty feet in length, and a ball hit across this line counts as a "home run." Scoring of this game is similar to scoring in baseball as are the terms used, i.e., "single," "double," "foul ball" and " home run." However, there is no running around bases for the batter(s), and there is no chasing the ball for the pitcher and fielders. A ball hit about thirty feet counts as a "single" and a ball hit about 45 feet counts as a "double." When a ball is hit outside of the sides of the triangle, it counts as a foul ball. The batter stands at the top of the triangle looking down the two equal sides that are about 60 feet in length. Marking a playing field is not necessary, but if a field is marked, it is shaped like an isosceles triangle. If a bat is not available, a broomstick or other such stick may be used. To play the game, get a wiffle ball and a bat. A single game of wiffle ball consists of 7 innings or 60 minutes, whichever is earlier. The game is similar to baseball, and is designed for 2–10 players. The game became popular nationwide by the 1960s, and is played in backyards, on city streets, and on beaches. The disapproval of people from across the nation pressured the New York legislature to remove wiffle ball and other items such as archery and scuba diving from the list of risky activities. The company has never been sued over safety issues in its 50+ year history. The story became a frequent source of ridicule and amusement, with sarcastically commenting, "According to new legislation introduced in New York State, to survive classic schoolyard games like capture the flag is to cheat death." Wiffle ball executives originally thought the order was a joke. Under a state law passed in 2009, any program for children that included two or more such activities would be defined as a “summer camp” subject to government regulation. In April 2011, the Health Department of the State of New York included wiffle ball on a list of recreational activities that present a "significant risk of injury" to children. This construction allows pitchers to throw curveballs and risers. 75-inch (19 mm) oblong holes the other half is non-perforated. The Wiffle Ball is about the same size as a regulation baseball, but is hollow, lightweight, of resilient plastic, and no more than 1⁄ 8 inch (3.2 mm) thick. It was named when his son and his friends would refer to a strikeout as a " whiff". Mullany at his home in Fairfield, Connecticut in 1953 when he designed a ball that curved easily for his 12-year-old son. The ball most commonly used in the game was invented by David N. Miniature versions of baseball have been played for decades, including stickball, improvised by children, using everything from rolled up socks to tennis balls. and was derived from the slang word whiff meaning to strikeout. Wiffle is a registered trademark of Wiffle Ball, Inc. The term Wiffle ball may refer to the sport as a whole, or the ball used in the sport. Two teams of one to five players each attempt to advance imaginary runners to home plate, and score, based on where each batter places the ball on the field. The sport is played using a perforated light-weight plastic ball and a long hollow plastic bat. Wiffle ball, a team sport developed in 1953 in Fairfield, Connecticut, is a scaled back variation of baseball designed for playing in a confined space.

“He nicked my pig and killed it, but he gave me enough bacon to live off for four years,” said World Party’s Karl Wallinger after Williams covered his 1997 album track. The sound of a man on top of the world – the accompanying Escapology album went platinum in more than 14 countries – protesting “I’m not sure I understand the role that I’ve been given”, the resolutely downcast lyrics rubbing against the tune’s soaring, orchestra-assisted uplift. Robbie Williams performing in Hong Kong in 2001. You got the feeling that Williams, a fan of Ian Dury, saw Rock DJ as his tribute to the Blockheads’ disco-influenced hits: here, the backing comes from Barry White’s mid-tempo It’s Ecstasy When You Lay Down Next to Me, while the rhythm of lyrics is audibly inspired by the Blockheads’ Reasons to Be Cheerful (Part 3). Go Gentle (2013)Īmid the camp jokes and Great American Songbook standards on Swings Both Ways lurked Go Gentle, a beautifully understated paean to his daughter, audibly influenced not by the swing era, but the sound of grownup, late-60s LA pop – Harry Nilsson, Jimmy Webb-era Glen Campbell. Still, the good bits are great, not least this witty, Kraftwerk-y Pet Shop Boys collaboration. It would be lovely to retrospectively claim that Rudebox – the album that ended Williams’ imperial phase at a stroke – is a lost left-field pop masterpiece, but it still sounds confused and patchy: the product of an artist who wants to do something different but hasn’t worked out what. Let Love Be Your Energy (2000)Īn infinitely more convincing take on Beatle-influenced alt-rock than the pallid Oasis-isms of 1997’s Old Before I Die and Lazy Days, Let Love Be Your Energy barrels confidently out of the speakers, a killer song atop wall of distorted guitars, its arrangement decorated with nods to I Am the Walrus and Penny Lane. Lovely melody, grandiose orchestration, lyrics that – typically – fret about reviews and star ratings and Williams’ own ambition: “All I wanted was the world.” 15. Williams subsequently took to deriding the Trevor Horn-produced Reality Killed the Video Star as “half-arsed” and dubbing it Let Me Underwhelm You, but its opening track is great. Motherfucker is the most startling of the lot: addressed to his children, it details generations of illness they might inherit: “I’d like to sing a song that says that you’ll be fine, but … I’d be lying.” 16. Long before mental health became a hot topic in pop music, Williams was laying bare his struggles in song. The bad rap on blues comes from fish that have been mishandled, not iced down immediately. They don't freeze well, and shelf life of a blue is 1 to 2 days. If they kept nicely frozen they would be an attractive commercial catch. Blues are an oily fish and very perishable. There is a reason for the love/hate attitudes about blues. And, he gives the stranger some fabulous dinners with their catch-of-the-day. In the process, the fisherman gives the stranger (and the reader) a dizzying education that ought to qualify for three hours college credit. The fisherman invites the stranger to join him for a summer of fishing beginning and ending the bluefish season in Vineyard Sound. The literary device is a prose dialogue between a fisherman and stranger he finds standing forlornly on the dock - a man who wants to understand the magic of the sea, but is reluctant to become a killer of fish. He has done it with meticulous research giving his readers that longed-for flash under the mirror surface of the sea revealing some of the wonder and mystery. Hersey, now 74, has verbalized the passion of the bluefisherman. "Better still," goes the old joke, "throw away the bluefish and drink the gin." Hersey includes a now-famous recipe from Nat Benchley of Martha's Vinyard in which the lime-marinated bluefish gets a healthy splash of gin then flames under the broiler. And nothing worse if it is old or handled improperly. There is nothing better than a sweet, fresh, moist slab of broiled bluefish. Ask yourself, do I feel energized, fulfilled, satisfied? Or do I feel angry, resentful, sad? For example, one respondent described his realization that his current work-life balance (or lack thereof) was engendering some pretty negative emotions: Once you’ve increased your awareness of your current situation, examine how that situation makes you feel. And although some professionals may be fine with long work hours, taking the time to think through these questions and acknowledge the tradeoffs you’ve made (whether intentional or not) is helpful for anyone looking to discover alternative ways of working and living. But while it’s often a major life event - such as the birth of a child, or the death of a loved one - that catalyzes these realizations, it’s possible to take a pause and start rethinking your priorities at any time. Many of them explained that they didn’t normally have the time or the energy to stop and reflect, and even expressed gratitude for the reflection space that the interview process itself allowed them. Of course, the professionals we talked to all led very busy lives. This life-changing event was the impetus she needed to take a step back, become aware of the mismatch between her current situation and her personal priorities, and begin to denormalize her habit of working long hours. She recognized that while the idea of “ must work, must work, must work” had been “indoctrinated into ,” she was now aware of the “clash” between this idea and “where was now” as a mother. Similarly, legal partner Kate told us that following the birth of her son, she experienced a major mental shift. So, I think from then on, I have taken a real step back. I thought, I am not doing this anymore, this is ridiculous. “ I was working quite long hours … it was a horrible sort of period … And I think for me, that was the key point. It was only at this point that she was able to recognize the toll her overwork had been taking on her family - and on her own mental and physical health: Take a step back and ask yourself: What is currently causing me stress, unbalance, or dissatisfaction? How are these circumstances affecting how I perform and engage with my job? How are they impacting my personal life? What am I prioritizing? What am I sacrificing? What is getting lost? Only after you take a mental pause and acknowledge these factors can you begin to tackle them.įor instance, after several years of intense focus on her career, Maya*, a senior associate at a law firm, described feeling like she’d hit rock bottom. This cycle is made up of five distinct steps: 1. Importantly, our research suggests that this is not a one-time fix, but rather, a cycle that we must engage in continuously as our circumstances and priorities evolve. While the details of every individual case differed, our study suggested a common mental process that consistently helped this group of professionals to change the way they worked - and lived - for the better.Īt a high level, our research showed that achieving better balance between professional and personal priorities boils down to a combination of reflexivity - or questioning assumptions to increase self-awareness - and intentional role redefinition. However, about 30% of the men and 50% of women in our sample appeared to consciously resist working long hours, describing a variety of strategies they developed for maintaining a healthier work-life balance. The majority of the interviewees described their jobs as highly demanding, exhausting, and chaotic, and they seemed to take for granted that working long hours was necessary for their professional success. We spoke with an equal number of men and women, and most of the interviewees were between 30 and 50 years old, with at least one dependent child, and in either middle or senior management roles. To explore this question, we conducted almost 200 in-depth interviews with 78 professionals from the London offices of a global law firm and an accounting firm. What does it take to free yourself from these unhealthy patterns and reach a more sustainable, rewarding work-life balance? Despite the resounding evidence that working long hours can be harmful to both employees and employers, many professionals still struggle to overcome their assumptions - and their deeply-ingrained habits - around work hours. |
